Tradition

Tibet, in central-east Asia and known as roof of the world, is the highest region in the world with the tallest mountains and the source of most majors rivers of Asia.

Tibet was rich in culture and tradition, but undeveloped in politcal, military and economic terms and therefore fell easy prey to Mao's red army.  The Chinese occupied  Tibet by 1959. which led to about 80,000 Tibetans fleeing to India, Bhutan and Nepal.

The art of Tibetan carpet making is an ancient, traditional craft dating back to 7th century AD. Tibetans use rugs for many purposes ranging from flooring to wall hanging to horse saddles, though the most common use is as a seating carpet.

The process of making Tibetan carpets is unique in the sense that the knotting method is different--allows for denser knots--from those used in other rug making traditions worldwide. The unique  Tibetan weaving method combined with Tibetan  highland wool, considered the best wool in the world, makes Tibetan carpets heirloom quality.

Process

Our carpets are recognized and prized for quality and craftsmanship.

Our carpets are made from pure Tibetan highland wool. Tibetan wool is unsurpassed in its quality for making carpets. Being not too fine, yet lustrous and supple, each fiber can be about 10-12 inches in length. It is strong and elastic, contributing to its longevity. Tibetan wool also has a high lanolin content, therefore acting as a natural stain repellent and provides a beautiful natural sheen.

Wool is hard-carded and hand-spun. This process preserves the length of the fiber and also provides the final carpet a much desired and prized hand-made finish.

We use top quality swiss metal-complex dyes for most of our carpets. Compared to vegetable dyes, swiss metal dyes are color fast and allows for use of a broader range of colors in our design. We also weave vegetable dyed carpets for special request. Each carpet is completely hand-made starting with carding of wool to final finishing and washing.

The high quality of the carpets is not only because of the high quality of raw materials, but also skilled craftsmanship. Our workshop associates are highly skilled artisans and technicians devoted to creating high quality works of art. Since every step of carpet making process takes place within our facilities, we have high degree of control to ensure high level of  consistency and efficiency.

Carpets are hand-knotted using traditional Tibetan weaving method. Each full size carpet can take between 2 to 6 months on average to complete thus providing the industry with the fastest turnaround time..
