Design Inspiration:
My artworks is a homage to Tibetan highland landscape, where Tibetan rugs were originally used and come from. It expresses my nostalgia about a place, where I have not even been physically, but trace my ancestry to. The artwork is inspired from traditional Tibetan art rendered in watercolors.
The original painting of the Mahakala is part of the Pang Lhabsol festival, which is an indigenous festival of Sikkim, where Mount Kanchendzonga is worshipped and celebrated as Sikkim's guardian deity. I have always felt close to the deity and the mountain has always been part of my psyche and dreams. The rendering style of the clouds is inspired by the Tibeto-Sikkimese furniture in my house, which was one of my first gateway into TIbetan art.
Yangdol Namgyal
Yangdol Namgyal is a painter and tattoo artist based in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, India. Her art is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, Himalayan culture and folklore. She studies her local folklores (which are intertwined with Buddhism), and like to represent it in her art as it shows our connection with nature. and our ancestors were nature worshippers following the Bon religion, before Buddhism came into our lives. Although Tibetan Buddhism consists of having respect for nature and preserving her, She feels we have forgotten this part of our culture, although the rituals are still practiced, the essence is lost and the younger generations don't understand it.. She hopes her art will be a gateway to people to reconnect with nature and personally, She practise arousing the Bodhicitta before any activity and dedicating the merit she acquires to all sentient beings, especially animals.
